The Fluid Controls Institute (FCI) is a trade association of manufacturers of fluid control and conditioning equipment. FCI focuses on technical issues and provides standards and educational documents that assist manufacturers and users of scope products.
FCI is governed by a Board of Directors. Many of FCI’s activities are carried out in its separate sections, which are categorized by product scope. Individual member companies may affiliate with one or more of these sections, depending upon their product lines.
The Fluid Controls Institute (FCI) traces its roots back to 1921, when 17 manufacturers of steam specialties came together to form the Steam Specialty Association. At the time, steam engines played a central role in industrial progress, and these manufacturers united to advocate for the interests of their growing industry.
As the field evolved, so did the organization. In 1933, the association was renamed the National Association of Steam and Fluid Specialties Manufacturers. During the 1930s, the group briefly affiliated with the Scientific Apparatus Makers Association (SAMA), operating as a section within that organization until the partnership concluded in 1938.
In 1940, the association adopted the name National Steam Specialty Club, marking a period of rapid growth and increased influence. Recognizing the need for a name that better reflected its expanding scope, a study committee was formed in 1954. The result: in April 1955, the organization officially became the Fluid Controls Institute, a name that continues to represent our mission and values with pride.
Over the years, the institute expanded, adding new product-specific sections that dealt with technical and educational matters related to scope products. While steam systems remain an area of emphasis, FCI and its members have broadened their area of expertise to address natural gas, sanitary service applications, oxygen service, hydrogen, and many other gasses and processes.
